Update: Takería Has Closed
Takería has officially closed its doors after 6 years of serving San Juan. The restaurant shared a message thanking customers and reflecting on the memories built over the years. While it’s disappointing to see it go, I’m glad I was able to experience it before it closed. This review reflects my visit when it was still open.
If you’re looking for tacos that pack flavor and flair, Takería in San Juan, Puerto Rico should be at the top of your list. Nestled just east of Laguna del Condado and beside the Profesor Jaime Benítez Rexach National Park, this spot has quickly become one of the most popular stops for locals and travelers craving authentic, creative tacos.
A Hidden Gem Near Laguna del Condado
Finding this place is part of the adventure. Parking can be tricky, with limited roadside space, but you can park at the nearby park and walk a short block. Or rent a scooter in San Juan, it’s an easy, fun way to explore without worrying about traffic or parking headaches.
Inside, the restaurant immediately sets a chill mood. The lighting is dim and cozy, the walls a mix of black paint and colorful graffiti art. One side houses the kitchen and bar, while the other holds bench-style seating and a walkway that keeps everything flowing smoothly.
The Tacos
Let’s get to what matters, the tacos.
This delicious taco joint offers a wide selection:
- Carnitas
- Pork
- Chicken Tinga
- Skirt Steak
- Tuna Poke
- Vegetarian Options
Each taco bursts with flavor, fresh ingredients, and just the right kick. The only downside? They’re small — gone in two bites, and sold individually for $3.75–$5.50 each. Pricey, yes. Worth it, also yes.
Beyond the Tacos
Even if tacos are what bring you in, the Takería menu goes far beyond. You’ll find:
- Pa’ Empezar (small plates)
- Kekas (stuffed quesadillas)
- Chimichangas
- Desserts and Cocktails
It’s the kind of menu that rewards curiosity, everything is made with detail, and the cocktails add a refreshing twist to the meal.
My Take on Takería
This restaurant nails the vibe, urban, cozy, and full of flavor. The prices might stretch your wallet a bit, but the creativity and freshness make it worthwhile.
When I return to Puerto Rico, this will be one of my first stops. I can’t wait to try more of what their kitchen is cooking up.

Visiting Old San Juan? Add Takería to Your Food Stops
If you’re exploring Old San Juan, walking the blue cobblestone streets, touring the forts, and wandering past colorful colonial buildings, Takería makes an easy and satisfying stop. After hours in the Puerto Rican heat climbing up to Castillo San Felipe del Morro or Castillo San Cristóbal, tacos and cold drinks just hit differently.
The location fits perfectly into a historic day of sightseeing. It’s casual enough that you don’t feel out of place in walking shoes, but good enough that it doesn’t feel like you settled for tourist food.
