Exceptional food worth the trip
What does this mean?I’ve still been on the hunt for that burger since writing my Kilpatrick’s article. Don’t get me wrong, Kilpatrick’s holds its own and I’d eat there again without hesitation. But if we’re being honest, the crown for the best burger in Hohenwald has officially changed hands. There’s a new king in town, and it’s called The Smash & Grab in Hohenwald.
From the burgers to the fries to the ridiculous one-pound cinnamon roll, this place absolutely lives up to its name. Smash burgers done right, no shortcuts, no filler, and no pretending to be something they’re not. After finally getting our timing right and making it there, I can confidently say this now sits at the top of most Smash & Grab Hohenwald reviews for a reason.
The biggest challenge with Smash & Grab is simply catching them when they’re open. Their schedule is tight. They’re only open on Friday from 11am to 7pm and Saturdays from 11am to 7. Blink and you’ll miss it. I believe they operate out of a food truck setup as well, but I can’t confirm that for sure. What I can confirm is that the brick-and-mortar spot gets serious traffic during those few hours they’re open.
They’re still fairly new, but word has clearly gotten out. Locals know. And when locals show up in numbers, that’s usually all you need to know.
By the time we got there, the place already had a steady flow of people coming in and out. Not chaotic, but busy enough that you could tell this wasn’t some hidden secret anymore. We ordered, grabbed our food, and left full. No regrets. They offer both sit-down and to-go orders, so you’re covered whether you want to hang out or grab it and roll.
What Locals Are Saying About Smash & Grab Hohenwald
Smash & Grab in Hohenwald isn’t some unknown spot anymore. Locals have already formed opinions, and they’re pretty consistent across the board.
Here’s the general consensus:
- Burgers are easily among the best in Hohenwald
- The onion smash burger is a standout
- Limited hours are the biggest complaint
- Prices are fair, but not “cheap”
- The cinnamon roll is borderline ridiculous in size
From what I saw and tasted in person and what locals are saying, the hype is mostly justified.

What We Ordered at Smash & Grab Hohenwald
Here’s exactly what we got.
I went with the Signature Smash Burger, which comes with two smashed beef patties, melted cheese, and a house-made roll. Simple. Clean. No nonsense. That burger was $10.95, and honestly, it doesn’t need anything fancy to be great. The beef was cooked properly, the cheese melted perfectly into the patties, and the bun held everything together without falling apart. Sometimes the simplest burger is the hardest one to get right, and they nailed it.
My girlfriend ordered the OG Smash Burger, which is smashed old-school style with a mountain of thinly sliced Vidalia onions pressed directly into the beef and cooked until they’re caramelized and crispy. If you like onions, this burger is a problem in the best way possible. The onions weren’t just a topping. They were part of the burger itself. That one came in at $12.95 and was worth every dollar.
Both burgers were excellent. No dryness. No grease bomb aftermath. Just well-executed smash burgers that hit exactly how you want them to.
Now we need to talk about the cinnamon roll, because this thing deserves its own paragraph.
The Smash & Grab Hohenwald Cinnamon Roll Is No Joke

This is a one-pound, house-made cinnamon roll. Soft. Loaded with icing. Big enough that we legitimately debated whether it would last us a few days. It might. Or it might mysteriously disappear faster than expected. For $7.95, it’s absurd in size and easily shareable unless you’re feeling reckless.
And to really drive the point home, my girlfriend isn’t big on cinnamon rolls or sweets in general, yet she absolutely loved this one.
I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ll probably need a multi-day fast after this meal.
Is It Worth the Price?
Turning the burgers into full meals added another $10 to the bill, and with the cinnamon roll included, our total came out to $45.95. Is that cheap? No. Is it outrageous? Also no. It’s right in line with places like Five Guys, and judging by the crowd, locals don’t mind paying for quality.
And honestly, once you taste the food, the price makes sense.
From a business standpoint, Smash & Grab is run extremely well. The concept is simple and smart. You walk in and there’s a small food bar in the corner where you build your burger. After that, all they need to do is smash the beef, cook it, and throw it on a bun. No massive menu. No kitchen chaos. Just focus on doing one thing really well.
Inside Smash & Grab : 80s Throwback Vibes

The interior of the place is another highlight. This is the second throwback-themed restaurant I’ve come across recently, with Rock & Roll Sushi being the first. Smash & Grab leans hard into an 80s theme. Movie posters line the walls. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Silence of the Lambs. Action figures from that era scattered throughout. It’s nostalgic without being forced, and it fits the vibe perfectly. My girlfriend was all in on the theme. The movie posters, quotes, and overall vibe hit exactly what she loves.
Everything about the place feels intentional.
