Starbucks introduces Oleato, a new line blending arabica coffee with Partanna cold-pressed, extra virgin olive oil. This combination creates a velvety, lush coffee experience. “Oleato,” meaning “oiled” in Italian, reflects this unique fusion.

Launch and Offerings

Launching in Italian locations on February 22, Starbucks describes Oleato as “revolutionary.” The line includes Oleato Caffé Latte, Oleato Iced Shaken Espresso, and Oleato Golden Foam Cold Coffee. Milan’s Starbucks Reserve Roastery will also feature Oleato Iced Cortado, Oleato Deconstructed, and Golden Foam Espresso Martini.

Global Expansion

After its initial launch in Italy, the unique Oleato coffee drinks are set to make their mark in Southern California, introducing Starbucks’ innovative blend to a new audience. Throughout 2023, this expansion will continue, as Starbucks plans to bring Oleato’s distinctive flavor to various other global markets. Notably, the rollout will include key locations in Japan, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom later in the year. This strategic expansion showcases Starbucks’ commitment to introducing Oleato’s novel coffee experience to a diverse, international clientele, promising a unique taste adventure that combines traditional coffee with the unexpected twist of olive oil.

Origin of the Concept

Howard Schultz, Starbucks’ interim CEO, inspired the Oleato line after a trip to Sicily. There, he experienced the Mediterranean practice of daily olive oil consumption. Adding olive oil to his coffee sparked the idea for Oleato.

Schultz’s Revelation

On Starbucks’ website, Schultz expressed amazement at the “unexpected, velvety, buttery flavor” olive oil added to coffee. He noted the enhancement of both hot and cold beverages.

Development Team’s Challenge

Back in the U.S., Schultz tasked Starbucks’ beverage team to develop this concept. Amy Dilger, a senior Starbucks beverage researcher, embraced the challenge, drawing parallels between the buttery nature of Castelvetrano olives and the flavors in Starbucks coffee.

Consumer Curiosity

With its unique blend, Oleato invites coffee enthusiasts to explore a novel flavor profile. Would you try Starbucks’ olive oil-infused coffee?
