This Volunteer Fry Company review started after finally catching the food truck rolling through Hohenwald, and this one had been on my radar for a bit. Volunteer Fry Company pulled into town, and after one visit, it’s easy to see why they don’t stay in one place for long.
They travel all over Middle Tennessee, and after trying their food, it makes complete sense. These aren’t your average food truck fries. These are fully loaded, flavor-packed, borderline ridiculous creations that hit hard the second you take your first bite.
And yeah, hot damn, they’re good.
What Makes Volunteer Fry Company Different
Let’s get one thing out of the way.
These are not frozen, throw-them-in-the-fryer fries. Volunteer Fry Company makes their fries from scratch using real ingredients and fries them in tallow, which immediately puts them in a completely different category than most food trucks or fast food spots.
You can taste the difference right away. The fries come out crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and carry a richer, more savory flavor than your typical oil-fried batch. They’re the kind of fries that could stand on their own, but instead, they pile on toppings that take things to another level.
Volunteer Fry Company Menu: Loaded Fries Done Right
The menu is built around loaded fries, but they also offer sandwiches, burgers, and daily specials. Still, let’s be honest, the fries are the main attraction. Their name is literally Volunteer Fry Company.
They offer everything from bulgogi beef fries topped with mozzarella, Korean ground beef, sesame pickled cucumbers, red chili sauce, and green onions, to cheeseburger fries loaded with seasoned burger, cheddar sauce, pickles, onions, sesame seeds, and burger sauce. You’ll also find options like chicken bacon ranch fries, Tennessee nacho fries with jalapeños and tortilla strips, chili cheese fries smothered in beef and bean chili, and even teriyaki chicken fries layered with yum yum sauce and stir-fried vegetables.
If you want to keep it simple, they even have basic cheese fries, but that almost feels like a waste when you see everything else they’re offering.
On top of that, they serve items like a Mississippi pot roast grilled cheese loaded with slow-cooked beef and pepperoncini flavors, along with a straightforward smash burger that keeps things classic and simple.
Volunteer Fry Company Review: What We Ordered
We kept it focused and went with the Buffalo Chicken Loaded Fries and the Teriyaki Chicken Loaded Fries, skipping the cucumbers on the teriyaki option.
And honestly, fireworks.
The Food: Where This Truck Wins
The first thing that stands out is the fries themselves. They had a great crisp to them and held up incredibly well under all the toppings without turning soggy halfway through the meal. That alone puts them ahead of a lot of loaded fry setups that fall apart after a few bites.
The portion size was also spot on. Because the fries are packed with meats, sauces, and toppings, it wasn’t too much and it wasn’t too little. It landed right in that perfect middle where you feel completely full afterward without feeling like you overdid it. By the end of the meal, we were definitely not hungry.
The teriyaki chicken fries were the bigger surprise. Fries with teriyaki chicken and yum yum sauce shouldn’t work as well as they do, but somehow they come together perfectly. You get a mix of sweet, savory, and creamy flavors that blend in a way that feels unexpected but works with every bite. My wife thought it leaned a bit too salty and could have used more yum yum sauce to balance everything out.
The buffalo chicken fries were more predictable but still executed really well. The grilled chicken brought solid flavor, the bacon added a salty kick, and the ranch balanced everything out. It’s a combination you’ve seen before, but here it just felt dialed in. At one point, it was hard to tell whether the saltiness was coming from the bacon or the fries themselves, but it didn’t matter because everything blended together in the best way possible. The only small issue, similar to the teriyaki, was that it could have used more buffalo sauce to really bring everything together.
Flavor Profile: Controlled Chaos
At first glance, it almost feels like too much is going on. There are a lot of toppings, a lot of sauces, and a lot of flavors competing for attention.
But once you start eating, it all comes together. The salty, sweet, savory, and creamy elements don’t fight each other. They layer instead. You’re not really picking apart each ingredient with every bite. You’re just experiencing the full combination all at once.
And somehow, it works.
Pricing: Fair or Pushing It?
Let’s be real.
Spending around $32 for two loaded fries and a tip isn’t cheap. At first glance, it feels like a lot for what is technically just fries.
But once you factor in the portion size, the quality of the ingredients, and how filling the meal actually is, it starts to make more sense. This isn’t a side dish. It’s a full meal built on top of fries.
Still, it’s fair to say that some people will look at the price and think it should land closer to $25 after tax. That thought crossed my mind too. But at the same time, with everything you’re getting, it doesn’t feel like you’re being ripped off.
Volunteer Fry Company Review: Where to Find Them
Volunteer Fry Company doesn’t stay in one place. They move around Middle Tennessee and pop up in different towns, including Hohenwald.
If you want to catch them when they’re nearby, your best bet is checking their schedule online:

That’s how you track them down.
Volunteer Fry Company Review: Would I Go Out of My Way?
Not every time.
But I’d absolutely go back.
This is one of those spots where you try it once, it sticks with you, and then you find yourself going back again when the opportunity lines up.
Would I Eat Here Again?
Yeah, no hesitation.
Not something I’d eat every weekend, but definitely something I’d go back for. Next time, I’d probably try the bulgogi fries or the pot roast grilled cheese, because if what we had is any indication, there’s more on that menu worth exploring.
If you see them in town, stop.
Final Verdict: Worth It, No Question
Volunteer Fry Company takes something simple and turns it into something memorable.
They’re using real ingredients, cooking fries the right way, and building combinations that actually deliver on flavor instead of just looking good on paper.
It’s a little expensive, sure, but not out of line for what you’re getting. The quality is there, the portions are right, and the experience is worth it. Volunteer Fry Company is one of the better food trucks in Middle Tennessee if you’re looking for something different from typical BBQ or tacos.
